Super fast internet in Moraira?
Can you imagine a life without the internet? Probably not. Yet the internet in its current form has only been in our lives since 1983. Although the internet has only been 36 years in our lives, we can’t life without it. Similarly in Moraira.
In England we are used to super fast internet. Wherever we are, at home, at the station, in a shopping mall or just on the street, there is always super fast internet. We do almost everything via the internet; watch movies, order clothes, we can even buy groceries online in England and have them delivered. In short, in England there is always and everywhere internet. Despite the fact that the WiFi internet only came into existence in 1985, this has now become an indispensable part of our lives.
Internet in Spain
Similarly in Spain. Certainly in the major cities of Spain there is always WiFi internet available. Outside the big cities, that is a completely different story. Consider the interior of Spain. It is hard to imagine, but there are still entire villages that do not even have an ADSL line and the 4G network has not yet even reached some villages in Spain.
Moraira
Fortunately, this is a different story in Moraira. In the first instance there was mainly internet that ran via an ADSL line. With a download speed of approximately 3 mbps, this was great for sending and receiving an email. So much more was not possible. Sending an email with various photos required a lot of “paciencia” (Spanish for patience). Remember that about 10 years ago, at least half of all villas and apartments in Moraira were not yet connected to the internet. Unthinkable by English standards, but here it was normal.
Dish internet
Since the arrival of the internet via satellite, a true revolution has taken place in Moraira. Everywhere you saw the men of the telecom companies placing those small saucers on the roofs of the houses and apartment complexes. There was even WiFi available with download speeds of up to 10 mbps. That was for the Moraira and surroundings the Ferrari among the internet speeds. The stability of the internet was not yet optimal. By streaming the internet signal there were and are regularly fluctuations in speed. This may mean that 5 mbps will come in one moment and this will peak at 10 mbps fifteen minutes later and then continue to fluctuate between the two.
With this connection and the ‘fast’ internet, the world seemed to be close to Netflix and the streaming of music. Unfortunately, both services require a stable internet connection. Due to the many fluctuations, these services are almost impossible to consult with the regular WiFi network.
New revolution
However, the digital revolution is increasingly coming to Moraira. Since 2018, several telecom companies in Moraira have been active with fiber optic internet. Rolling out this network is a hellish job in Moraira. The cables must be concealed under the ground as much as possible and that is a real challenge with the rock and stone floor here. But they read well and started the work in good spirits. More and more urbanisations are therefore being provided with fiber optic internet.
Remote working from Spain?
