Blue flag beaches in Moraira

Which beaches in Moraira have a Blue Flag?

Moraira is known for its small bays, clear Mediterranean water and well-maintained coastline. In 2026, two beaches in Moraira have been awarded the international Blue Flag:

  • El Portet
  • Les Platgetes

In addition, Club Náutico Moraira has once again received a Blue Flag for the quality, sustainability and facilities of the marina. One beach that is not on the 2026 Blue Flag list is Playa de l’Ampolla, Moraira’s main town beach. This does not mean that it is not a good beach; the Blue Flag is an annual award based on a wide range of specific criteria.

Last updated: September 2026.

What does a Blue Flag mean?

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised environmental and quality award given annually to beaches, marinas and certain tourism boats. For beaches, the criteria are divided into four main areas:

  • water quality
  • environmental management
  • environmental education and information
  • safety and services

A Blue Flag beach therefore needs more than clean seawater. The beach must also meet requirements relating to cleanliness, waste management, toilets, safety, lifesaving facilities, accessibility and environmental information. Beaches are inspected during the season and the Blue Flag can be temporarily or permanently withdrawn if the required standards are no longer met.

El Portet

El Portet is one of Moraira’s best-known beaches. The small sandy beach lies in a sheltered, shell-shaped bay beneath the Cap d’Or peninsula, with views across the Mediterranean towards the Peñón de Ifach. Its sheltered position often means relatively calm water, making El Portet particularly popular for swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking. El Portet has once again received a Blue Flag for 2026. Along the beach you will find a small promenade with several restaurants and terraces.

Our tip: parking around El Portet is limited, especially during July and August. If you are driving, it is worth arriving early.

Les Platgetes

Les Platgetes lies along the coastal road between Moraira town centre and Cala l’Andragó. It consists of small sandy and rocky sections with clear Mediterranean water. A promenade runs alongside the beach and there are restaurants and other facilities nearby. Les Platgetes has also retained its Blue Flag for 2026. The combination of sand and rock gives it a different character from El Portet. It is particularly enjoyable if you like swimming and snorkelling.

Our tip: if you are looking purely for a sheltered sandy beach, El Portet will probably suit you better. For swimming and exploring the rocky coastline, we really like Les Platgetes.

Club Náutico Moraira

Blue Flags are not only awarded to beaches. Marinas can also receive the award if they meet specific requirements relating to environmental management, safety, facilities and services. Club Náutico Moraira has once again retained its Blue Flag in 2026. The marina is located directly beside the town centre and is an important part of Moraira, with restaurants, terraces and the fishing port all within walking distance.

Does Playa de l’Ampolla have a Blue Flag?

No. Playa de l’Ampolla does not have a Blue Flag in 2026. L’Ampolla is Moraira’s main sandy town beach, located directly beside the castle and just a short walk from the centre.
Because of its central position, visitors often assume that it is one of Moraira’s Blue Flag beaches. However, the two beaches officially awarded the distinction in 2026 are El Portet and Les Platgetes. A beach not having a Blue Flag does not automatically mean that the beach or its water is poor quality. The award is based on a broader set of annual criteria and an application process.

Blue Flag beaches near Moraira

There are several more Blue Flag beaches within easy driving distance of Moraira.

Benissa Costa

Benissa has two Blue Flag beaches in 2026:

  • Cala Baladrar
  • L’Advocat

L’Advocat is a new addition to the Blue Flag list for 2026. La Fustera does not have a Blue Flag in 2026. For guests staying around San Jaime or Benissa Costa, Baladrar and L’Advocat can be particularly convenient because there is no need to drive into Moraira first.

Calpe

Calpe has five Blue Flag beaches in 2026:

  • Arenal-Bol
  • La Fossa
  • Cantal Roig
  • Puerto Blanco
  • El Racó

Puerto Blanco and El Racó received the distinction for the first time in 2026.

Jávea

Jávea has three Blue Flag beaches in 2026:

  • Arenal
  • La Granadella
  • La Grava

Arenal regained its Blue Flag in 2026.

Benitachell

The spectacular Cala del Moraig in El Poble Nou de Benitatxell also has a Blue Flag in 2026. It is very different from Moraira’s sandy beaches, with its dramatic cliffs, pebble beach and clear water.

Alicante has 77 Blue Flag beaches

The province of Alicante has 77 Blue Flag beaches in 2026, more than any other Spanish province. For visitors staying in Moraira, this means there is an unusually large choice of officially recognised beaches and coves within a relatively short distance. The Comunitat Valenciana as a whole has 152 Blue Flag beaches in the official 2026 list.

Our local tip

We would not choose a beach based on the Blue Flag alone. For a sheltered sandy bay and Mediterranean atmosphere, El Portet is one of our favourites. For swimming and snorkelling around a mixture of sand and rocks, Les Platgetes is a good choice. If you are staying in Benissa Costa, Baladrar and L’Advocat may actually be more convenient than driving into Moraira. And if you want a very different coastal landscape, Cala del Moraig or La Granadella are well worth the drive.
The Blue Flag is a useful indication of standards and facilities, but the best beach ultimately depends on what you are looking for.
