Stand Up Paddle is a great way to explore the coastline around Moraira from the water. In Spain, SUP is often referred to as paddle surf, and it is especially popular along the Mediterranean coast. Why is Moraira so good for Stand Up Paddle?

You do not need a lake or river to enjoy paddleboarding. On the Costa Blanca, SUP is commonly practised directly on the sea. The coastline around Moraira is made up of beaches, sheltered bays and rocky sections. On calm days, the water is often flat enough for relaxed paddling and the clear Mediterranean water means you can frequently see the seabed beneath you. This makes SUP suitable for both beginners and more experienced paddleboarders.
However, it is still the Mediterranean Sea. Wind conditions can change during the day, so calm water in the morning does not necessarily mean the sea will remain equally calm later.

Stand Up Paddle at El Portet

El Portet is, in our opinion, the best place in Moraira to try Stand Up Paddle for the first time. The small bay is relatively sheltered and on calm days usually has very little wave action. You can first practise standing up, turning and steering close to the beach before paddling further into the bay. That also makes El Portet a good choice if you are travelling with children or with someone who has never used a SUP board before. During the season, SUP boards and kayaks can be rented directly at the beach. Guided SUP tours are also available, including sunrise trips towards Cap d’Or.
Our tip: go early in the morning. El Portet is quieter and sea conditions are often better before the wind picks up later in the day.

Trying SUP for the first time?

Stand Up Paddle often looks easier than it actually is. The first few minutes usually involve finding your balance, getting used to the board and discovering that sitting or kneeling down occasionally is perfectly normal. Start slowly. Paddling on your knees is a good way to become comfortable with the board. Once you feel stable, you can try standing up. A wider beginner board generally makes this much easier.

Stand Up Paddle with children

SUP can also be a fun family activity, especially in a sheltered bay such as El Portet. With younger children, we would not immediately plan a longer coastal route. Start close to the beach and see how confident everyone feels on the board. Guided excursions may have minimum age requirements, so check these before booking.

Paddleboarding towards Cap d’Or

If you already feel comfortable on a SUP board, you can paddle from El Portet towards Cap d’Or when sea conditions are suitable. From the water, the coastline looks completely different. You paddle alongside the rocky coast below Cap d’Or and enjoy views back towards El Portet and Moraira. For your first longer trip, we would recommend joining a guided excursion. Local instructors know the coastline, wind and sea conditions much better.

Pay attention to wind and sea conditions

Although Moraira often offers good conditions for Stand Up Paddle, the sea is not always calm. Always check the weather and wind forecast before heading out. Avoid offshore winds, stay reasonably close to the coast and use appropriate safety equipment such as a leash and flotation aid. If conditions do not feel right, choose another day. Fortunately, Moraira will still be there tomorrow.

Can you SUP in Moraira all year round?

In principle, Stand Up Paddle is possible throughout the year when weather and sea conditions are suitable. Summer is naturally the most popular period, but you can also see paddleboarders on calm days in spring, autumn and even winter. Outside the summer season, water temperatures are lower and rental companies may operate on reduced schedules.

Our tip

If you simply want to try SUP once during your holiday, go to El Portet on a calm morning and rent a board. If you have never paddleboarded before, or if you want to explore more of the coastline, a lesson or guided tour from El Portet or Club Náutico is a better choice. And once you have paddled across a calm Mediterranean bay at sunrise, it becomes quite easy to understand why SUP is so popular here.
