Moros y Cristianos 2024

Nothing in Moraira is as well prepared as the fiestas of ‘Moros y Cristianos’. This spectacle has always taken place in the first weeks of June and is very well attended every year. The event is even internationally known and tourists from far and wide come to Moraira to see the spectacle. Many guests come back every year to see it again and to be part of this festive week.

What is Moros y Cristianos?

Spain by nature has a very long coastline and there used to be a lot of fighting there. In the first weeks of June, Moraira looks back to the time when the Moros (Arabs) came to Spain and took over large parts of the country. This is the reason that both in Moraira and in the rest of Spain (especially in the south) there are many Moorish influences, this is especially well visible in various buildings.

Eventually, the Cristianos (Christians) took over large parts of the country again. However, this did not happen without a struggle. During “Moros y Christianos” the conquest of the Moros is reenacted on the beach of Moraira. They do this very truthfully in magnificent costumes, swords and above all… on horseback! After the conquest of the Moros, the Christianos can recapture Moraira after some time. This spectacle used to include more time but during the annual festivities this goes fast-forward and is already the next day.

Both of these moments are handled very grandly. To illustrate, flags are hung up everywhere so that after the evening of the conquest of the Moros, it can also be seen everywhere that Moraira is in the hands of the Moors at that time. The following day there is another battle on the beach where the Christianos will win and with that the final battle is fought. Moraira again belongs to the Christians and this is celebrated extensively. Besides these conquests, big parades are organized in which you will see the most fantastic costumes. It is an honor to participate in these parades and these are usually the local families who pass this on to the other family members.

Visiting this event yourself?

Definitely do if you have the opportunity. The spectacle on the beach, the various parades and the concluding fireworks show are wonderful to see. And do not forget, early June temperatures in Moraira are already delicious.
