Do you need a car during your holiday in Moraira? Not necessarily. If you stay in Moraira town centre or within walking distance of the beach, restaurants and shops, you can manage surprisingly well without one. If you choose a villa in San Jaime, Benimeit, Benissa Costa or one of the more elevated residential areas, however, having a car is usually very convenient.
Moraira itself is relatively compact, but the surrounding area is hilly and public transport is more limited than in larger Spanish resorts. Fortunately, there are several ways to get around: car hire, walking, cycling or e-bikes, taxis, airport transfers, local buses and the TRAM from nearby Teulada. Do you need a car in Moraira?

It mainly depends on where you are staying and what you want to do during your holiday.

A car is particularly useful if:

• you are staying in a villa outside the town centre
• you want to visit different beaches and coves
• you plan to shop at larger supermarkets
• you want to explore Jávea, Calpe, Dénia, Altea or Guadalest
• you are travelling with young children
• you do not want to depend on taxis or timetables

You can manage without a car if:

• you are staying in Moraira town centre
• the beach, restaurants and shops are within walking distance
• you mainly want to stay in Moraira
• you are happy to use an occasional taxi
• you rent a bicycle or e-bike
• you use an airport transfer to reach your accommodation

The location of your holiday home therefore makes a big difference. A central apartment requires a very different transport plan from a villa high in the hills of Benimeit.

Getting around Moraira by car

For maximum freedom, a car remains the easiest way to explore Moraira and the surrounding Costa Blanca. Distances may look short on a map, but hills and winding residential roads can make a three-kilometre journey much less attractive on foot. With a car you can easily reach:

• Teulada

If you are planning several day trips, a car gives you considerably more flexibility.

Exploring Moraira on foot

If you are staying centrally, walking is often the most enjoyable way to get around. Moraira town centre is compact and many useful places are close together, including:

• L’Ampolla beach
• Moraira Castle
• the marina
• shops
• restaurants
• cafés and terraces
• the Friday market

You can also walk from the centre towards El Portet. However, Moraira becomes much hillier as soon as you move away from the central coastal area. A route that looks short on Google Maps may involve a considerable climb. That is worth remembering when choosing your holiday home if you plan to walk regularly.

Cycling and e-bikes in Moraira

The northern Costa Blanca is extremely popular with cyclists. Professional cycling teams regularly train around Calpe and in the mountains inland from the coast. For recreational riders, the arrival of the e-bike has made a particularly big difference. Electric assistance makes Moraira’s hills far more manageable. An e-bike can be useful for reaching places such as:

• Moraira town centre
• El Portet
• Moravit
• Benissa Costa
• Teulada
• nearby coastal areas

More experienced cyclists can also explore longer routes towards Calpe, Benissa and the Vall de Pop. Bear in mind that not every road has a dedicated cycle lane, so always choose routes appropriate to your experience.

Electric scooters, scooters and motorbikes

For shorter journeys, a scooter or motorbike can be a practical alternative to a car. They are easier to park and work particularly well for short coastal journeys. Electric kick scooters are classified in Spain as Vehículos de Movilidad Personal (VMP).
The rules changed significantly in 2026. VMPs now need to be registered and carry the required identification, while compulsory insurance forms part of the current system. Municipalities can also impose additional local rules.
If you rent an electric scooter during your holiday, make sure the rental company provides a vehicle that complies with the current regulations and ask where you are permitted to ride it. For Moraira’s longer and hillier routes, we generally find an e-bike, scooter or car more practical than a kick scooter.

Taxis in Moraira

Moraira does have taxis, although the number available is relatively limited compared with larger resorts. For an occasional journey to:

• a restaurant
• the town centre
• a beach
• your accommodation

a taxi can work perfectly well. During July and August, major events and later in the evening, demand can be much higher. Our advice is simple: book your taxi in advance when you need to be somewhere at a particular time. This is especially important for airport journeys.

Airport transfers from Alicante or Valencia

If you do not want to hire a car, an airport transfer can be a good option. Private transfers are available from both Alicante Airport and Valencia Airport to Moraira. This works particularly well if your accommodation is in:

• Moraira town centre
• Pla del Mar
• or another location close to shops, restaurants and the beach

You can travel directly from the airport to your holiday home and then use walking, taxis or an e-bike during your stay. Shared shuttle services from Alicante are also available. For guests staying centrally, this can be a practical alternative to hiring a car for the entire holiday.

Public transport in Moraira

Public transport is available, but it is more limited than in larger towns and cities. A regional bus service connects: Calpe · Moraira · Teulada with additional connections available in the surrounding area. Timetables and frequencies can change depending on the season and day of the week. For an occasional journey, the bus can therefore be useful. If you want to explore several beaches, villages and restaurants during the same holiday, a car remains considerably more flexible.

Taking the TRAM from Teulada

Moraira does not have its own railway or TRAM station. The nearest station is in Teulada, approximately six kilometres inland. TRAM d’Alacant Line 9 runs through Teulada and connects the northern Costa Blanca between Dénia and Benidorm. Stops include:

• Dénia
• Gata de Gorgos
• Teulada
• Benissa
• Calpe
• Altea
• Benidorm

At Benidorm you can connect with other TRAM services towards Alicante. This makes the TRAM an interesting option for a day trip if you prefer not to drive. You will, however, first need to travel from Moraira to Teulada station. For most visitors it is therefore more useful for occasional excursions than as everyday transport.

Free Benibús to the beaches of Benissa Costa

If you are staying in or close to Benissa Costa, there is another useful summer option. The municipality of Benissa operates its free Benibús service between Benissa and the coast during the main summer season. In 2026, the summer service runs from 22 June until 27 September. It connects the town with parts of the coastline and the coves of Benissa. This can be useful if you want to explore beaches around Benissa Costa without taking the car every time. As this is a seasonal service, always check the latest timetable for the year of your holiday.

Can you have a holiday in Moraira without a car?

Yes. But choosing the right accommodation becomes much more important. If you do not want to hire a car, we would particularly consider accommodation in:

Moraira town centre
Restaurants, shops, beaches and cafés are literally on your doorstep.

Pla del Mar
A quieter residential location while still being close enough to walk into Moraira.

Parts of Moravit
Some properties are within walking distance of Cala l’Andragó and nearby restaurants.

When looking at villas, pay attention to the actual walking route, not just the distance in kilometres.  A property may be physically close to the centre but still involve steep hills that make walking less practical.

Prefer not to drive at all? Airport transfer,  central accommodation and walking/taxis/public transport. In that case, choose your accommodation carefully.

Parking in Moraira

Outside the main summer season, parking in and around Moraira is generally manageable. During July and August it naturally becomes busier, particularly around:

• Moraira town centre
• L’Ampolla
• El Portet
• Cala l’Andragó
• the Friday market

Most private villas have their own parking space, carport or parking area within the grounds. Parking arrangements for town-centre apartments differ by property. On busy summer days, it can sometimes be easier to park slightly outside the busiest streets and walk the final part into town.

There is no single transport solution that suits every Moraira holiday. If you stay in the centre and mainly want beaches, restaurants and relaxed days around town, you can comfortably manage without a car. If you stay in a villa in the hills or want to explore the wider Costa Blanca, a rental car will make your holiday considerably easier.
