Visit Les Fonts de l’Algar

Do you already know this secret spot just a 40-minute drive from Moraira? A beautiful area with lots of greenery, beautiful flowers and enchanting waterfalls; ¨Les Fonts de l’Algar¨, or the Algar waterfalls. The clear water rises from various sources and has meandered its way down through the mountains. Once at the bottom of the mountain, the river continues its way through Altea and then flows into the Mediterranean Sea.

Flora and fauna at the Algar waterfalls

The Algar waterfalls have created beautiful nature around the various mountain rivers, which change in composition per season. The 1.5 kilometre long walking route along the mountain river will amaze you with the centuries-old trees and the special plants that live both in and around the mountain rivers. Incidentally, this nature reserve has been protected since 2002.

Cooling water of Fonts de L´Algar

The great thing about this protected nature reserve is that visitors are actually allowed to enter the cooling water. This has been a popular attraction for both Spaniards and tourists for years. The very well-maintained park and the crystal clear water make for beautiful pictures. The spring water is around 17 to 18 degrees all year round, making it wonderfully cooling swimming water, especially in the summer months. The waterfalls and various pools were once considered a source of health.

Practical points at the Algar waterfalls

The nature park is definitely worth a visit, but some preparation is advisable in order to fully enjoy the Algar waterfalls.

  • The nature park has a picnic area. This beautiful location, which overlooks the mountain river, is fantastic for a sandwich or a cooling drink. You can bring these refreshments yourself or you can buy some in the restaurant of the park. Please note that this restaurant is only open during the summer months.
  • The nature park also has a sunbathing area. Don’t forget to bring a beach towel for this.
  • The mountain river has several outlets where you can swim. Please note that the riverbed is rough and the waterfalls are surrounded by mountainous terrain. Swimming/water shoes are therefore not an unnecessary luxury.
  • Because the nature park is neatly maintained daily, a small fee is charged for entering the park. The price is approximately €4 per adult. The exact entrance fees for Les Fonts de l’Algar can be found on their own website. With the exception of a few public holidays, the park is open to the public all year round.
  • There is ample parking around the nature park. The last time we were at the waterfalls, parking cost €3 per vehicle.
