Discover Dénia | Castle, Harbour, Beaches and Wonderful Spanish Food

Colourful streets, an impressive hilltop castle, a lively harbour and some of the best seafood on the Costa Blanca. Welcome to Dénia, one of our favorite places for a day trip from Moraira! Dénia has a wonderful mixture of history, Mediterranean charm and authentic Spanish life.
Wander through the old fishermen’s quarter, admire the views from the castle or enjoy a leisurely lunch in one of the town’s many restaurants. And if you love good food, you’re in for a treat. Dénia has even been recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding gastronomic culture. We particularly enjoy the atmosphere around the old town, the harbour and the restaurants.

Here are our favorite things to do in Dénia, together with a few local tips to help you plan your visit from Moraira.

1. Dénia Castle | Beautiful Views over the Town and Harbour

The most famous landmark in Dénia is undoubtedly Castillo de Dénia, the impressive castle overlooking the town. Its origins date back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when Dénia was an important settlement during the Moorish period. Today, you can explore the historic walls, towers and pathways while enjoying wonderful views over the town, harbour and Mediterranean Sea. You can also admire the impressive Montgó mountain rising behind Dénia.
Our tip: during the summer, we’d recommend visiting early in the morning or later in the day. The walk uphill is quite steep, and it can get very warm. Inside the castle, the Dénia Ciutat Vigía Interpretation Centre tells the story of the town’s fascinating past. Entrance fees and opening hours vary, so check the latest information before your visit.

Check the official Dénia Castle opening hours and visitor information.

Interested in history?

Dénia’s Archaeological Museum is also worth visiting. The museum is now located in the historic Casa de la Marquesa de Valero de Palma at Carrer Cavallers 3, rather than inside the castle. Here, you can learn more about Dénia’s Roman, Moorish and medieval history.

2. Baix la Mar | The Colourful Old Fishermen’s Quarter

One of our favourite places in Dénia is Baix la Mar, the traditional fishermen’s neighbourhood between the castle and the harbour. This charming area is filled with narrow pedestrian streets, colourful houses and attractive little squares. It’s the kind of neighbourhood where you can simply wander around without following a particular route. You’ll discover pretty corners, small restaurants and welcoming terraces where you can stop for a coffee or a drink. Make sure you visit Plaça de Sant Antoni and explore the surrounding streets.
Our tip: combine Baix la Mar with a walk around the harbour. They’re close together and give you a lovely impression of Dénia’s maritime character.

3. Dénia Old Town | Shopping, History and Spanish Atmosphere

Dénia’s historic centre is another lovely place to explore. Around Plaça de la Constitució, you’ll find the Town Hall, the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and several traditional streets. From here, it’s easy to reach Calle Marqués de Campo, one of Dénia’s best-known shopping streets. This broad, tree-lined street is filled with shops, cafés and attractive buildings.
If you enjoy Spanish food, we’d also recommend wandering along Carrer de Loreto, which is well known for its restaurants and tapas bars.

Visit Dénia’s Local Market

If you love discovering local produce, the Mercat Municipal de Dénia is worth a stop. Here, local residents shop for fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and other Mediterranean ingredients. It’s a lovely place to experience everyday Spanish life.
Our tip: visit the market in the morning, when the stalls are busiest and the choice is usually at its best.

4. Els Magazinos | Enjoy Dénia’s Wonderful Food Scene

If you love tapas and Mediterranean cuisine, Els Magazinos should definitely be on your list. Located at Carrer Pont 19, close to Baix la Mar, this attractive gastronomic and cultural market brings together more than twenty food stalls and other local businesses. You’ll find everything from traditional Spanish dishes to creative Mediterranean food. What we particularly like is the relaxed atmosphere. Wander around, see what takes your fancy and settle down for a leisurely lunch.
Our personal tip: plan your visit to Dénia around lunchtime. Good food is one of the main reasons to come here!

Discover Els Magazinos and its restaurants.

Don’t Miss the Famous Red Prawns of Dénia

Dénia is particularly famous for its gamba roja de Dénia, a prized Mediterranean red prawn. You’ll find this local speciality on the menus of various restaurants, alongside delicious rice dishes and freshly caught seafood. Food is such an important part of the town’s identity that Dénia became a UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015. For anyone who enjoys discovering local Spanish cuisine, Dénia is a real treat.

5. Dénia Harbour | Yachts, Ferries and Waterfront Restaurants

Dénia has a large and lively harbour, with traditional fishing boats, modern marinas and impressive yachts. It’s a lovely area for a relaxed walk, especially if you enjoy watching the boats come and go. From the harbour, ferries also depart for the Balearic Islands, including Ibiza and Mallorca. Along the waterfront, you’ll discover restaurants and cafés where you can enjoy a drink overlooking the sea.
Our tip: finish your day in Dénia with a stroll around the harbour. Towards the evening, the atmosphere is particularly enjoyable.

6. Dénia’s Beaches – Sandy Les Marines or Rocky Les Rotes?

One of the things that makes Dénia special is its varied coastline. In fact, the beaches to the north and south of the town are completely different.

Les Marines | Long Sandy Beaches

North of Dénia, you’ll find Les Marines, known for its wide stretches of golden sand. These beaches are popular with families and are ideal for a relaxing day by the Mediterranean. If you’re looking for a traditional sandy beach with plenty of space, this is the area we’d recommend.

Les Rotes | Beautiful Rocky Coves

South of the harbour lies Les Rotes, where the landscape becomes much more rugged. Here, you’ll find rocky coves, clear Mediterranean water and beautiful coastal scenery. Places such as El Trampolí and Punta Negra are popular with visitors who enjoy swimming and snorkelling. Water shoes are useful because the rocks can be slippery. Les Rotes is also part of a protected marine environment, so always respect the local rules.

Our favourite? We particularly enjoy Les Rotes for its peaceful coastal atmosphere and beautiful views.

7. Festivals and Spanish Traditions in Dénia

Dénia is a lively town with a wonderful calendar of traditional Spanish festivals. During March, the streets come alive with the colourful Fallas, including impressive sculptures, music and fireworks.
In July, the town celebrates its Festa Major, with parades, entertainment and local festivities. The programme traditionally includes Bous a la Mar, a bull-related event that remains controversial because of animal welfare concerns. The Moros y Cristianos celebrations are another highlight, featuring colourful costumes, music and spectacular parades. If you’re visiting during a local festival, it’s worth checking the latest programme.

Visit the official Dénia tourism website for events and visitor information.

How to Get to Dénia from Moraira

Dénia is an easy day trip from Moraira. The journey normally takes around 35 to 45 minutes by car, depending on your route and traffic. There are two main options.

The scenic route via Jávea
We particularly enjoy driving through Jávea and around the Montgó area. The scenery is beautiful, although there are several winding sections along the way.

The route via the AP-7
Alternatively, you can travel via the AP-7 motorway, which is toll-free on this section between Valencia and Alicante.

Where Is the Best Place to Park in Dénia?

There are several public car parks in and around Dénia. One useful option is Torrecremada, from where you can walk towards the town centre. Parking is also available around the harbour, although some spaces are paid. We’d recommend leaving your car outside the narrow historic streets and exploring the centre on foot.

Check Dénia’s official public parking information.

Can You Travel to Dénia by Tram?

Yes! Nearby Teulada is connected to Dénia by Line 9 of TRAM d’Alacant. Moraira itself doesn’t have a tram station, so you’ll first need to travel to Teulada.
It’s an enjoyable alternative if you don’t want to drive, although we’d recommend checking the timetable and return connections beforehand.

Check the official TRAM d’Alacant timetable.
