Visit Cuevas de Canelobre
Cuevas de canelobre in Busot
Want to see something other than beaches and villages? Perhaps it is a good idea to go
direction Busot. Here are the “Caves of Canelobre” located. The drive from Moraira takes about an hour. The last 20 minutes you will notice that the roads become narrower and that they rise quite a bit. Parking is available in the small parking lot or on the side of the road. Once you arrive at your destination you will notice that the cave is at quite a high altitude. It can be 7 degrees different from Moraira!
The highest cave in Spain is located in the province of Alicante
With a height of about 70 meters, this is one of the highest caves in Spain. Located at an altitude of about 700 meters, from here you also have a beautiful view of the immediate surroundings. Every hour there is a guided tour of the cave, so you can learn all the necessary facts and figures. Tickets can be bought on the spot. This tour lasts about 1 hour and is given in English and Spanish.
Constant temperature in the cave
After a 45-meter long tunnel, you come out on a platform in the middle of the cave. Once you arrive in the cave, the temperature is stable; all year round it is 17 degrees here. However, it is extremely humid, which can be seen in the puddles of water here and there on the ground and on the wet walls.
Special design in the cave
The cave is named after ´el canelobre´, as you can see immediately upon entering. One of the eye-catchers in the cave is this stalagmite. It looks like a kind of large candlestick and is over 100,000 years old. The enthusiastic guide leads you to various vantage points, all accessible by stairs that have been made so that you always get to a different height and have a different view.
She could tell all kinds of things about the different forms that could be seen here and there. Among other things we saw the Sagrada Familia. A beautiful creation of about 25 meters high, a true work of art. In addition, there is much more to see, such as an evil witch, an angel, frog and Gandalf from ´the lord of the rings´. Bizarre to think that these shapes were created by nature, especially considering that the process takes thousands of years.
Unique music venue
Occasionally, inside this cave, music concerts are held. Think of classical and instrumental music which can be visited by small groups. Because of the unique location and acoustics, we are sure that this will be a unique experience.
Facts about the cave
A little history about how the cave was created… The Arabs are said to have discovered the cave around the 10th century. A lot of years passed but then it was used during the civil war of Spain (1936-1939) as a refuge and aircraft repair shop. To be able to work here properly, they blew up the cave from the inside with dynamite and built several platforms where they could carry out repairs. Because they blew up the cave from the inside, several stalactites and stalagmites were lost, which can still be clearly seen. Since the 20th century, the caves have been open to the public.
