Algar Waterfalls
Les Fonts de l’Algar near Moraira
Just a 40-minute drive from Moraira lies one of the Costa Blanca’s most stunning natural gems: the Algar Waterfalls. This idyllic nature reserve, officially known as Les Fonts de l’Algar, offers crystal-clear spring water, lush greenery, and a refreshing escape from the summer heat. A perfect day trip for visitors of all ages.
A Natural Wonder in Callosa d’en Sarrià
The Algar Waterfalls are located in a protected nature reserve, where water from various mountain springs flows through streams and cascades, making its way into the Algar River. Eventually, the river passes through Altea and empties into the Mediterranean Sea.
Along the 1.5 km (0.9 mi) walking route, you can admire centuries-old trees, unique plants, and colourful flowers that change with the seasons. Since 2002, the area has been officially protected to preserve its natural beauty.
Swimming in Refreshing Spring Water
One of the biggest attractions of Les Fonts de l’Algar is that visitors can actually swim in the spring water. With an average temperature of 17–18°C, it’s wonderfully refreshing in summer. The crystal-clear pools, natural cascades, and rocky landscapes create unforgettable scenery. In the past, the water was even believed to have health benefits.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
To make the most of your day at the Algar Waterfalls, a little preparation goes a long way:
- Picnic & dining | The park offers a picnic area overlooking the river. Bring your own food or buy something at the park’s restaurant (open only in the summer months).
- Sunbathing area | Perfect for relaxing between swims. Don’t forget your towel.
- Water shoes | Highly recommended, as the riverbed is rocky and the terrain is uneven.
- Opening hours & entrance fee | The park is open most of the year. Entry is around € 8,- per adult. Check the official Les Fonts de l’Algar website for up-to-date prices.
- Parking | Plenty of parking is available around the park. Fees are around € 5,- per vehicle (last checked summer 2025).
